Benefits of a Living Will

Even though it may seem as though a living will is the same as a will…it is not. The basic premise of a living will is that in the case that an individual becomes incapacitated or worse, the directives and medical preferences will be passed though a living will.
Living wills really provide benefits to those who desire to avoid any type of artificial form of life support as well as other means of keeping a person alive when they would normally have died a natural death. Also included in a living will are items such as organ donations, tube feeding and artificial resuscitation which are indeed mandatory for medical professionals to follow according to what is placed in the living will.
This being said, the benefits of a living will include:

The refusal of treatments which you would not want done to your body. If you do not want to be kept alive using machines and such or do not want to be tube fed until either you are brought back to health or pass away, living wills can provide the avoidance of such practices.
In addition to these treatments, one may specify which treatments they would actually accept overall in their living will as when the time comes, they may not be able to voice a concern over the matter.
Another benefit is that you have control over your future. If you do not want to be subject to artificial resuscitation if something should happen, then it will be granted that any type of provision would not be provided in order to help provide an answer on treatment before any arguments between family members begins to arise if there is ever a sudden illness or accident.
This brings us to our next benefit, whereas family members will not have to argue over what treatment will be provided for you in the case of a tragic illness or injury should occur. The treatment will go for as long as that which is stated in the living will.
Another point to be made is that many family members have a very hard time deciding to eliminate artificial treatment and tube feeding as this is one of their loved ones. The living will eliminates any hard decisions that family members will have to decide upon therefore helping them live with the decisions which have already been made FOR them rather than deal with any guilt due to any decisions they feel could have been different or more.
Living wills also ensure that your doctors will listen to your wishes and needs if you should ever become incapacitated. In many cases doctors do what they feel is necessary. You can change this in your living will if you so decide by thinking about such things in advance.
As far as continuing treatment, it can become quite expensive and burdensome as doctors provide very expensive treatments. This can become quite a burden on ones family and many individuals create a living will in order to keep the financial burden from affecting family members. Once a certain level on financial burden is reached and there is no improvement, once can place the outcome in their living will.
These matters are never something most people want to consider but it is indeed important to consider what to do once the time comes for an individual and their family to consider a living will and trust in order to ensure an agreeable outcome for all in the future.
